For most people, NASA exists in documentaries, history books, and rocket launches watched from afar.
For those of us in Pasadena and Altadena, it's part of our community.
It's our neighbor.
This October, one of the world's most celebrated scientific institutions is opening its doors once again, giving the public a rare chance to step inside the place where some of humanity's greatest discoveries begin.
Explore JPL returns on October 10–11, 2026, inviting visitors to experience the innovation, engineering, and imagination behind NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Admission is completely free, but tickets are required and are expected to disappear quickly when reservations open on Saturday, August 29 at 9:00 a.m. PDT.
If you've never experienced Explore JPL before, this is an event you won't want to miss.
A World-Class Institution in Our Own Backyard
Pasadena is known around the world for many things—the Rose Parade, the Rose Bowl, historic architecture, and a thriving arts scene.
But it's also home to one of the most influential scientific institutions on Earth.
For nearly 90 years, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has pushed the boundaries of exploration, designing spacecraft and robotic missions that have transformed our understanding of the universe.
From the Voyager spacecraft that continue traveling through interstellar space to the Mars rovers exploring another planet, countless historic missions have been imagined, engineered, and managed right here in our own backyard.
For our community, JPL isn't simply a research facility.
It's a source of pride.
What Is Explore JPL?
Explore JPL is a free public open house that offers a behind-the-scenes look at NASA's legendary laboratory.
For one weekend, visitors have the opportunity to explore exhibits, meet scientists and engineers, experience interactive demonstrations, and learn how missions to distant planets become reality.
Whether you're a lifelong space enthusiast or simply looking for an unforgettable family outing, there's something for everyone.
Visitors can explore four exciting themed areas:
🚀 Missions That Changed the World
Discover the spacecraft and discoveries that forever changed how we understand our solar system and beyond.
🌕 Moon to Mars
Learn how NASA is preparing for future human exploration of the Moon and Mars through cutting-edge robotics and technology.
✈️ In Flight
Go behind the scenes of spacecraft engineering and mission operations to see how deep-space exploration comes to life.
🔬 Makerspace
Get hands-on with activities designed to inspire future scientists, engineers, inventors, and explorers.
Throughout the event, visitors will also have opportunities to speak directly with the people whose work is shaping the future of space exploration.
Reserve Your Tickets Early
Admission is free, but availability is limited.
If history is any indication, reservations won't last long.
Ticket Reservations Open
📅 Saturday, August 29, 2026

Inspire the Next Generation
One of the most rewarding parts of Explore JPL is seeing children experience science in a completely new way.
For many young visitors, this is the moment they realize careers in science, engineering, robotics, or aerospace are within reach.
The event isn't just about looking at exhibits.
It's about inspiring dreams.
Who knows?
The next engineer to design a Mars rover could be walking through the gates that weekend.
Celebrate Pasadena While You're Here
Explore JPL is also a great reason to spend the day enjoying everything Pasadena and Altadena have to offer.
