We Out Here Altadena Celebrates One Year of Eaton Fire Relief

Juicy Little Society We Out Here Altadena

One Year After the Fire, Altadena Rises in Unity

On Wednesday, March 18, the parking lot of Fair Oaks Burger (2560 N. Fair Oaks Ave, Altadena) will transform into a lively festival of gratitude and hope. From 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, neighbors and friends will gather for The Juicy Little Society’s “We Out Here: Altadena 1-Year Anniversary Eaton Fire Relief” Community Appreciation Celebration. This special event marks one year since the devastating Eaton Fire and the birth of a grassroots relief effort that has uplifted Altadena. It’s not just an anniversary – it’s a testament to how far the community has come by standing together.

From Tragedy to a Mission of Hope

When the Eaton Fire tore through Altadena in early 2025, it left over 14,000 acres scorched and nearly 9,400 structures destroyed, with at least 19 lives lost. Entire neighborhoods were reduced to charred foundations, and cherished local resources vanished overnight – the longstanding Altadena farmers’ market and even the historic community garden were completely destroyed. Amid the chaos and loss, one Altadenan refused to let despair take root. Krystal “Miss Juicy Little” Lopez, a born-and-raised Altadena resident and founder of the nonprofit Juicy Little Society, saw her own youth clubhouse burn down in the blaze. Instead of giving up, Krystal immediately channeled her grief into action, rallying neighbors to help neighbors. In the very first days after the fire, she turned the parking lot of Fair Oaks Burger – a beloved local burger stand that miraculously survived the fire – into a hub for relief. With donated food and supplies laid out on folding tables, a humble pop-up pantry began offering whatever help it could to fire survivors. From these impromptu beginnings, a bigger vision was born.

The Birth of “We Out Here Altadena”

Out of the ashes grew a grassroots movement. Krystal’s Wednesday pop-ups evolved into “We Out Here Altadena,” a weekly mutual aid marketplace created directly from the community’s needs. She made a bold promise: every Wednesday, rain or shine, we will show up for Altadena. And she has kept that promise. For the past year, every Wednesday at noon, the Fair Oaks Burger parking lot comes alive as a vibrant hub of hope and help. What started as one woman’s response to disaster has blossomed into one of Altadena’s most consistent support systems – fueled entirely by love, donations, and volunteer power. The name “We Out Here” itself became a rallying cry: we’re out here, together, and we’ve got you. Neighbors helping neighbors – that’s the simple mission that guides each week’s event. Many of the volunteers are themselves Eaton Fire survivors, and many who once came for help now return as volunteers to pay it forward. In this space, the lines between giver and receiver blur into one family. Altadena residents have proven that recovery isn’t just about rebuilding homes; it’s about rebuilding community.

A Weekly Lifeline for Altadena

Week after week, We Out Here Altadena has been a lifeline for dozens of families still recovering from the fire. Each Wednesday, everything is FREE for Altadena residents in need – no questions asked. The offerings have grown into an impressive range of goods and services. A typical Wednesday looks like a bustling farmers’ market and community fair combined: tables overflow with fresh farm produce, pantry staples, and groceries; there are hot meals and drinks (often including something hearty like burgers or tamales) and even healthy smoothies made from donated fruits and veggies. Parents can find diapers and baby supplies. Folks pick out clothing and shoes for their families. Toiletries and cleaning products are available, along with household essentials to replace what was lost. There’s even a table of spices and seasonings, so families can cook flavorful meals with their new groceries. Importantly, everything is arranged in a farmer’s-market style layout that allows residents to “shop” with dignity for what their family needs. “This isn’t a charity line – it’s your community market,” Krystal often says, reinforcing that sense of empowerment and respect. Beyond material goods, resource booths have offered help with FEMA paperwork, legal aid, and mental health referrals – recognizing that true recovery is more than just stuff.

Perhaps even more vital than the supplies is the sense of community these gatherings foster. Each Wednesday, the parking lot becomes a place to not only pick up food, but to connect. Neighbors swap stories, share hugs, and celebrate little victories. People who might have felt forgotten find a warm smile and a listening ear. “We Out Here” has become a weekly ritual of healing: a safe space where survivors can exhale, laugh, cry, and heal together. What started as a relief effort has grown into a support network and an impromptu family reunion every week. In Krystal’s words, “gathering isn’t a luxury – it’s part of recovery.” Through food and fellowship, Altadena is rebuilding not just homes, but hope – one Wednesday at a time.

Community Appreciation Celebration – Anniversary Event Highlights

Now, one year later, it’s time to celebrate how far this community has come. The 1-Year Anniversary Community Appreciation Celebration on March 18 will be a special Wednesday indeed – think of it as We Out Here Altadena super-sized! The organizers have planned a host of festive offerings to thank the community and rally even more support. Here’s what to expect at the celebration:

  • Fresh Farm Produce: The produce tables will be extra bountiful, stocked with freshly harvested fruits and veggies from local farms. Come fill a bag with seasonal goodness and taste the resilience of Altadena’s soil.

  • Free Burgers from Fair Oaks Burger: In a beautiful full-circle moment, Fair Oaks Burger (our gracious host all year) will be firing up the grill to flip free burgers for attendees. The same family-owned stand that opened its lot for relief will now fill that lot with the mouthwatering smell of burgers to feed all who come. Nothing says community like sharing a meal together!

  • Fresh Smoothies & Juices: The Juicy Little Society crew will be blending up fresh smoothies made from farmers’ market fruits and greens. Cool, nutritious refreshments will keep everyone energized – a little taste of the “healthy smoothies” that have become a Wednesday staple.

  • Raffles & Appreciation Gifts: As a thank-you to the community, there will be raffles with fun prizes and special appreciation gifts for attendees and volunteers. You might walk away with a gift card to a local business, a piece of custom Altadena merch, or other surprises. It’s the organizers’ way of giving back a little extra love to those who have given so much.

  • Seasoning Station Restock: One unique hallmark of these events has been the seasoning section – because rebuilding a kitchen isn’t just about pots and pans, it’s about spices and flavor! For the anniversary, the seasoning station will be fully restocked with herbs, spices, and sauces. Make sure to grab some chili flakes, cinnamon, or your favorite seasoning to bring zest back to your home cooking.

  • Full Thrift Store Pop-Up: Clothing donations have poured in, and the celebration will feature a full thrift store pop-up (courtesy of Juicy Little Society’s “JuicyLittleFinds” initiative). Racks of gently used clothing, jackets, shoes, and accessories will be neatly organized for folks to browse. Whether you need a new outfit or just love thrifting, you’ll find treasures – all free to our fire-impacted neighbors.

In addition to these features, you can expect music, smiles, and maybe even a few happy tears. It’s a day to rejoice in community resilience. Volunteers will be on hand to help carry groceries or just share in the joy. Families are encouraged to bring their children – there’s nothing like seeing kids who once experienced fear last year now enjoying a safe, festive afternoon, burger in one hand and smoothie in the other.

MADE IN DENA: Proudly Supporting & Participating

One of the beautiful things that has emerged this past year is collaboration among local groups. A standout supporter of We Out Here Altadena has been MADE IN DENA – and we’re excited to continue that support at the anniversary celebration. Jason Hardin, the founder of MADE IN DENA, first connected with Krystal at a community event last fall and felt compelled to help. Since then, our team has shown up on Wednesdays with open hearts and even some swag. (You might have spotted the bright hot-pink “Altadena Heartbeat” hoodie Krystal wears – we made that just for her, in her signature color!) We believe in Krystal’s mission and the power of Dena culture, so we’ve been proud to donate custom gear and volunteer our services however needed. In fact, plans are in the works for special edition apparel to raise funds for We Out Here – blending local fashion with activism.

On March 18, the MADE IN DENA family will be out in force at Fair Oaks Burger, helping wherever we’re needed – whether flipping burgers, handing out produce, or just cheering on our neighbors. Look for us (we’ll likely be wearing our Altadena pride on our sleeves) and come say hi! This partnership is a shining example of how local businesses, organizations, and residents can unite for lasting change. We’re all in this together, and MADE IN DENA is here to stay by Altadena’s side.

Altadena Strong: The Power of Community

As we celebrate this one-year anniversary, it’s important to reflect on what it truly signifies. It’s not just marking a date on the calendar – it’s honoring 12 months of compassion, hard work, and hope. In that time, Altadena has shown what it’s made of. When disaster struck, neighbors, friends, and even strangers stepped up. Fair Oaks Burger’s owners, Janet and Christy Lee, for example, had just seen their own family home ravaged by the flames – yet they still opened their parking lot to serve others. That selflessness set the tone for everything that followed. Week after week, volunteers of all ages and backgrounds have given their Wednesdays (and many other days behind the scenes) to make sure no Altadena family goes hungry or feels alone. Local farms donated produce, restaurants donated meals, and donors big and small chipped in. The Eaton Fire may have taken homes and buildings, but it did not break Altadena’s spirit. If anything, it galvanized it.

This Community Appreciation Celebration is a moment to cherish how far we’ve come together. For the families who lost so much in the fire, it’s a reminder that they were never alone – an entire town has had their back from day one. For the volunteers and organizers, it’s a chance to see the fruits of their labor: children smiling, elders getting the support they deserve, new friendships forged out of hardship. And for everyone who attends, it’s an inspiration to see the power of community in action. Altadena strong is not just a slogan; it’s a reality you can feel in the air on Wednesdays.

But even as we celebrate, we know the work continues. Recovery from a disaster of this scale is a long journey. Some neighbors are still rebuilding their homes and lives. The Juicy Little Society has pledged to keep these weekly events going as long as they’re needed – and with your help, they will. The anniversary is not an endpoint; it’s a rallying point for year two of recovery and beyond. It’s a time to thank everyone who has given their time, resources, or love to this cause, and to invite even more people into the circle.

Join Us – Be Part of Altadena’s Comeback StoryConsider this your personal invitation. If you’re in or around Altadena on March 18, come out and celebrate with us! Bring your family, bring a friend or neighbor who could use a little support or a fun afternoon. Even if you weren’t directly affected by the fire, your presence and positivity are welcome – this event is truly for everyone in the community. Stop by to grab a free farm-fresh lunch, pick up groceries for someone who can’t make it, or just soak in the good vibes. If you’ve been looking for a way to give back or connect with your neighbors, this is the moment. Volunteer a bit of your time at the event, or simply show up and make new friends. And don’t forget to spread the word – share the details with anyone who might benefit.

Altadena’s recovery has been a story written by everyday heroes. On this one-year anniversary, let’s write the next chapter together. Come see what the buzz is about at Fair Oaks Burger’s lot – the hugs, the laughter, the mountains of fresh produce, the sizzle of burgers on the grill. Come feel the Dena love in full effect. We out here, we’ve been out here all year, and we’re not stopping now. This Wednesday, join us in celebrating a community that refused to give up on each other. Together, we’ll keep showing the world what it means when Dena stands strong.

We’ll see you on March 18 – hungry for burgers, hope, and a brighter future for Altadena. Don’t miss this celebration of community power – be there, be part of it, and experience the difference a united neighborhood can make. 💛
